The How and Why of Computer Hard Drive Crashes

You are clicking away on the keyboard, trying to finish a project that you have been working on for the past week, when – suddenly – your tower starts filling the room with grinding and clicking sounds. Before these sounds have truly registered in your mind, the computer crashes and all of your hours of hard work come crashing down with it. After the shock wears off, it finally occurs to you that everything that was contained within your computer hard drive is gone and that you will have to find some way to recover the lost data.

There is no singular set of circumstances that brings about the crash of a hard drive. A variety of things can happen to cause its sudden cessation, which ultimately results in the same effect: the loss of data and the need to recover that which was lost. Aside from the loss of a drive or its components as a result of the wear of aging equipment, the hard drive can also crash from the effects of a malicious virus or, most commonly, from problems with the structure of your disk directories.

If you are smart, you will have a plan in place to recover data that is been lost through the destruction of a hard drive, or some other means, long before it ever becomes an issue. While there are a number of companies and software packages that are devoted to data recovery, the best plan is the one that costs the least amount of time, effort and money. By simply backing up your data on a disk or CD - and taking steps to ensure that the most recent version is always backed up - you will be able to recover the lost data once the cause of the crash has been addressed and the unit has been repaired. Of course, if the hard drive is destroyed due to fire or flood, the backup may be lost, as well, so be sure to have a copy of the backup disk/CD in a separate location. Otherwise, you will not have the ability to recover the data, unless you employ a data recovery firm or purchase software that is specifically designed to target and recover any data that is been lost.
