The Role of Forensic Science in Hard Drive Recovery
In the past, computer data that was deleted by the user was beyond recovery, and cyber-criminals were enjoying a brand new arena in which to commit a variety of offenses. As the World Wide Web snagged more people, the frequency and creativity of technological invasions burgeoned and a brand new branch of illegal activity grew on the tree of crime. Before long, Forensic Science crossed the technological line and developed the capability of hard drive recovery.
Though the necessary tools and methodologies were in place, the field of Forensic Science was faced with the obstacle of extracting data from the hard drive that met the courts" standard for admissible evidence. Hard drive recovery, then, wasn"t going to be as straightforward as it first appeared. A very specific set of circumstances had to surround the recovery of data that was taken from the hard drive, or it would be ineligible to serve as evidence, by legal standards.
Today, Forensic Science plays a key role in the conviction of felons who have utilized the internet for unscrupulous purposes, and has also provided evidence through their hard drive recovery techniques that has assisted in convicting white-collar criminals who have stored critical data in their hard drive and attempted to delete it, in order to avoid prosecution. Of course, hard drive recovery deals with extracting data that"s housed within the computer"s memory, and can capture data that"s already been deleted by the user. Deletion, then, is no obstacle to Forensic Scientists.
In addition to hard drive recovery, the field of Forensic Science can also assist in the extraction of evidence regarding user activity. For instance, one popular television programmed showcased the evidence that was used to convict a killer on the basis of the websites that were visited and their connection to the actual murder. The individual had taken steps to locate a map of the victim"s neighborhood, then downloaded it and made incriminating notes within the body of the image. These, and other pieces of electronic evidence, played a critical role in the conviction of the individual.
